Working Online: Why It Works

It could be your neighbor, your best friend's mom, your retired uncle, your ex-boss. Everyone's doing it! Working online is proving to be the new career frontier. And with good reason. Millennials, Generation Xers and Yers, and Boomers alike have discovered the financial, practical, personal and professional advantages of working at home and online.
First, let's talk money. Working at home saves tons of money -- on gas or the cost of public transportation, wear and tear on a car, a bike, or shoes! What urbanite hasn't agonized for hours waiting for a commuter train that never came, or has sat by the roadside waiting for a tow truck to deliver you to the nearest repair garage?
Next, there's time saved -- sitting in traffic caused by accidents, road construction, uncooperative weather, or just plain commuter hour horror. As a northerner, you endure dreaded ice and snow and sleet storms. If a westerner, you face crippling mudslides and forest fires and earthquakes. You Plains and southern folks experience tornadoes, hurricanes and floods. We all have our dreadful story woe of the time we were stuck in or struck by... !
Then, consider the slavery of an inflexible schedule -- no time or opportunity for a doctor's visit, a bank transaction, an unanticipated domestic emergency. Your pipes burst, a child broke a limb, an elderly parent became disoriented and was found far from home, your spouse just won a 10-day trip to Shangri-La. No matter, you're chained to a desk and to a time clock!
Let's not forget the stress on your nervous system - the anxiety generated by all the above possibilities, some converging simultaneously! This intangible reality can't be measured in dollars wasted or time expended. But you know it when you see it and feel it. Your hands gripped that steering wheel so much tighter; you couldn't wait to get home for that relaxing first glass of wine; your angst level headed off the charts when you walked into one of those dreaded endless team or department meetings.
Lastly, and perhaps for some cyber workers, the deal breaker - relinquishing one's independence to do the work you want to do, when and where you want to do it! This factor has constituted the 'piece de resistance' for many a cyberwork convert. After all, isn't that everyone's dream - to do what we love and love what we do, all the while earning a respectable living. Isn't that your dream, too?
Are you ready to join this dynamic 21st century trend of cyberworking? Take a look at a recently published book, Shifting Gears To Your Career Working Online, (New Cabady Press, April 2015). It takes you into the world of online work, helps you find yourself there; then guides you, with specific, practical strategies, tools, and tasks, as you prepare yourself well, establish your own starting point as a web worker, and become highly successful working online.
