Female CEO Kate Gorman Tackling the Male-Dominated Mobile Gaming Industry

Females are radically shifting the future of gaming, and one San Francisco-based mobile gaming company is on the front lines making it happen.

Consider this: 65% of U.S. women ages 10-65 play mobile games, but the majority of gaming companies don’t target them. Instead, they choose to make competitive games that don’t appeal to the female demographic, which widely values collaboration over competition.

Just 10% of gaming companies have female executives, but women make up half of all mobile game players. Fort Mason Games Founder and CEO Kate Gorman is one of the few female executives flipping the script and tackling the male-dominated mobile gaming industry head on.

Fort Mason designs mobile games to help women relax and de-stress. With females making up 75% of Fort Mason's employee base, its female-centric approach is unlocking an audience that few other companies are tapping, and setting a high bar for reaching this important group.

According to Gorman, gaming studios that aren’t catering to women are leaving billions of dollars on the line.

As a Silicon Valley native, you could say innovation is in the young entrepreneur’s DNA. Gorman has been blazing trails since her early 20s when she led Zynga's casino slots game division from inception to $300 million in revenue.

At just 26 years old, she decided it was time to follow her passion for games and seize the opportunity to approach customers in a fresh, new way by targeting the underrepresented female demographic. As an avid casual mobile game player, Gorman wanted to build virtual atmospheres that were fun, immersive, and positive.

"I was ready for a new growth phase. Building mobile games that appeal to everyone with a focus on women opens up an immense market that other companies have long failed to cater to and capitalize on," says Gorman.

Gorman chose the name Fort Mason Games because she spent a lot of time in San Francisco’s Fort Mason Park when she was thinking about the type of gaming company she wanted to create and build.

The hardest part of building her own business from the ground up? Taking the first leap, according to Gorman. "Once you have your team and the mission established, executing and driving towards the first milestones are much easier. We were able to take our first game to market in a year."

To find out what women wanted in their mobile games, Fort Mason Games surveyed 3,000 women and 93% of respondents said they play slot games on their phones and tablets to relieve stress. The survey findings also revealed that women tend to be highly social when it comes to mobile gaming. These findings were used as key guiding principles in the design of Fort Mason’s premier game, Confetti Casino.

Augmented, the new AI?

We hear the fear in people’s voices when we mention AI and ML, blue collar jobs going, eating into white collar jobs, autonomous cars, lorries, taxis.

The fear is what will we all be doing with our time? How will we earn money? Will we hear ‘they took our jobs…?’ But this time it’s not some other country, its tech soaking up work like blotting paper. This ‘fear’ could even be hampering adoption of even the most basic AI and ML.

However, the truth is that things like autonomous cars will take time to fully come about, in a recent article in the WSJ it pointed to augmenting drivers in the here and now. Using the best AI tech, implemented in human-driven cars, to augment the human driver to reduce or even nearly eliminate road deaths in the USA as the quickest benefit. This could be the real competition to Autonomous cars, Human Augmented Driven Cars.

That could have huge implications for the fortunes of companies like Tesla. It could also spell doom for companies such as Uber and Lyft, which aren’t yet profitable and might not be until they can cut out their high human costs—that is, removing drivers from vehicles.

I think there will be a mix of driverless and human augmented cars. In the confines of a city, all the sensors and additional tech needed to support fully driverless cars could be implemented and hence I keep coming across this term, and we use it within our tech pitches, Augmented. Human and tech is deliverable, today.

All this doom and gloom for tech companies won’t come about. The issue is we do not want to be driving in cities and towns, we don’t want to be doing repetitive jobs, and connivance has a value. Over time there will be a transition. The AI Augmented Human will take many forms and will be stiff completion for robots.

For insurance we use the term Augmented Insurance, this is AI for insurance. Adding AI Tech into a process and making the humans better. Adding AI Tech to human process is the way to improve, to offer new services, do better customer services and provide an overall better user experience.

The Law As It Applies To A Fire Risk Assessment

If you are an employer of five people or more, the law requires you to carry out a fire safety assessment of your premises with the object of keeping any risk to a minimum and keeping your employees safe. So this applies to most businesses: even a small shop will often have five or more employees.

The law concerned is The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, and it doesn’t just apply to employers by any manner of means. It also applies to educational premises; small and medium places of assembly holding 300 people or less; large places of assembly (over300); theatres, cinemas, and similar places; healthcare premises; residential care premises; sleeping accommodation; private rented accommodation including a house converted into two or more flats; transport premises; animal premises and stables; and even open-air events and venues. In other words, pretty much everywhere! The HSE also has a separate guide for those who work in construction.

The responsible person could be you, the employer, or you may delegate the responsibility to someone else. It could be a landlord. It could be the owner of a stables. And so on.

The duty of the responsible person is to undertake a fire risk assessment and to keep a written record of it. The assessment must be reviewed on a regular basis. It also needs to be reviewed if anything changes. This could be something as simple as taking on an additional employee or changing the layout of your shop storeroom. For example, you might change your storeroom around and the effect is that a fire escape route is altered or becomes unusable.

When carrying out the fire risk assessment you must identify the hazards, identify people at risk, evaluate and remove or reduce the risks, and record your findings. You also need to prepare an emergency plan and provide training for your staff during their working hours.

You also need to prepare an evacuation plan showing fire escape routes that are as short as possible and enough exits for all people to escape – including those with mobility needs. The latter item can immediately cause a problem because if you have an office block you may have someone in a wheelchair on the fourth floor and the lift cannot be used, so you need to have people allocated to help them down the stairs. You also need to have emergency lighting where required, and emergency doors that open easily. You need to have a staff meeting point and have regular emergency drills - at least one per year.

You may need a fire detection and warning system and it needs to be checked regularly to ensure everything is working. You need to carry out checks on a regular basis to ensure that fire doors close correctly, escape routes are clear, fire escapes can be opened easily, and fire exit signs are in the right place and easily visible. You should also check fire extinguishers and have them regularly maintained. You should keep a record of any faults in systems and equipment and note any remedial action taken.

In addition, you need to ensure that any dangerous and flammable substances on your premises are stored safely, and away from anything that could set light to them.

If all of this seems like a lot of work, that is because it is. Furthermore, unless you have received specific training it may well be that you won’t spot something that could be a hazard. Some things may be obvious, but others not.

This is why many businesses today now use the services of specialist fire risk assessment companies that can come in and undertake the assessment for you. They have people who have been trained and know what to look for. Certainly, there is a cost of a fire risk assessment, but it is much easier than trying to do it yourself. Using such a company means that nothing will get missed, and they should provide you with the written report you are required to keep, along with their recommendations, if any. This way you will know that you are complying with the law, and the cost of a fire risk assessment is probably less than it would cost you to do it yourself, because your time is valuable and is better spent on running your business.
