Simultaneously Successful and Meaningless in The Digital Age

The sheer cacophony of voices online is deafening. The pursuit to reach the top of this noisy heap is relentless, vicious, and conceivably all consuming. For those who triumph on this platform, what does it really mean? Are these individuals on their way to ascension to some higher plane of existence? And what of the gazillion other beings fighting to be heard and seen? Are their lives totally irrelevant in the face of failure to meet cyber expectations?
Regardless of our position within this frenzied digital food chain, the likelihood is that it is not truly representative of our level of success in work or life. The rules of engagement may spin faster and faster out of control, but our core worth does/should not.
Professionally, I have achieved success in a number of ways over the years. I have helped companies increase revenue. I've consistently leveraged resources to reduce costs. My efforts have increased the visibility and brand value of start-ups to corporations. In one case alone, a single product line I helped market saw a 390% increase in annual sales. So, as far as I am concerned, I have proven my professional worth over and over, and over again.
On a personal level, there are precisely three goals I vowed early on to achieve in my lifetime:
  1. Live as an ethical, responsible, and empathetic human being.
  2. Create a body of artwork. Be proud of what I create.
  3. Find that one person, a mate, with whom I am totally compatible. Treat that person like the gold standard that they are.
At this point in time, I realize that I have reached my primary personal goals. I feel particularly blessed with regard to the second and third. While I must admit I am a cynical version of my early self and therefore not as quickly empathetic as I once was, I am most assuredly both ethical and responsible.
I have reached the conclusion that I am content with how my life has progressed. This is regardless of the trials and tribulations that hound us all over time. This is with full acknowledgement of all the stupid things I wished I'd never done. It is with a sigh of relief that I regret very little.
And yet, like countless others, the sum of my achievements is virtually meaningless on the grand scale, the Internet of Things, as it were. The decibel level is so confoundedly high. Digital overlords like Google make it exponentially costly to be heard or seen. Whether you are trying to grow your business or simply become employed, the adage that you need money to make money was never more apropos. The constantly changing and frankly insipid rules of engagement set forth by the overlords are maddening. This particular brand of disruption is totally fabricated, totally inane.
While I await, or at least hope for, some sort of digital revolt, I want to take this opportunity to congratulate you. I want to acknowledge the successes you have already had and those you are working toward. I want to commend you on your perseverance to gain traction with your digital voice. What you have done and will do matter. Don't let the overlords convince you otherwise. Your true worth is what you make of it, not how or if it is echoed within the confines of the digital world.
